Mikvah preparation is an essential part of the mitzvah.
Before immersion, a woman ensures that nothing blocks the mikvah water from touching her entire body. In halacha, this is called removing a chatzitzah — a barrier between the body and the water.
Proper preparation ensures a halachically valid immersion.

Below is a complete mikvah checklist you can follow.
✔ Remove all jewelry and bandages
✔ Wash entire body with soap and warm water
✔ Soften scabs and remove them if possible
✔ Inspect entire body to ensure it is free of intervening substances
Pay special attention to areas that are often overlooked, such as behind the ears, under the arms, and between fingers and toes.
The goal is that the mikvah waters can touch every part of your skin without obstruction.
Hair must be completely clean and tangle-free.
✔ Remove all hair ties, clips, and pins
✔ Wash hair thoroughly with shampoo
✔ Rinse thoroughly
✔ Comb through hair to remove knots and tangles
Do not use conditioner, as it leaves remnants in the hair and prevents water from reaching every strand.
✔ Remove nail polish or false nails (unless approved by your halachic authority)
✔ Cut, file, and clean nails
✔ Clean skin from dirt
Ensure there is no residue under nails.
(For more detailed nail polish questions, ask your local orthodox Rabbi)
✔ Remove all makeup
✔ Remove glasses, contact lenses, and false eyelashes
No mascara, eyeliner, or cosmetic residue should remain.
✔ Clean in and around the ear
✔ Blow and clean nose
✔ Remove dentures, retainers, or any other removable dental apparatus
✔ Floss and brush teeth
Anything removable should be taken out before immersion.
Complete a final full-body inspection to ensure nothing was missed.
Most women prepare in a private preparation room at the mikvah facility. These rooms are typically equipped with all the supplies that you will need:
Towels, robes & slippers
Soap and shampoo
Nail clippers
Cotton swabs
Mirrors
Tooth brushes, tooth paste
Hair combs
However, some women prefer to prepare at home and then go to the mikvah for immersion.
It is important to check with your local mikvah in advance to see what supplies are available, as some facilities do not provide preparation items and expect you to bring your own.

Hefsek taharahs
7 clean days
Mikvah night
Separation days (vestos)
Instead of using paper calendars, many women use Mikvah Tracker to:
Automatically calculate mikvah dates and separation days (vestos)
Track clean days (sheva nekiim)
Automated reminders for hefsek taharas
At first, mikvah preparation can seem complicated. But once you understand the steps, it becomes a rhythm.
Mikvah Tracker is a modern, rabbinically approved app for Jewish women that helps you track your period, mikvah nights, and family-purity cycle. It offers halachically accurate reminders (hefsek taharah, separation days, mikvah), fertility insights (ovulation, basal body temperature), and a clean, private calendar tailored to your customs.
